Our 2024 COLLIDER Artist in Residence is Anjela Magpantay! Over the last several months Anj has been developing a new work, it is for when you meet me, a new, interactive theatre piece that explores and draws upon cultural gift-giving and the human nature of acceptance. Anj has been delving into creative research and has started conversations with collaborators. Here’s an update: “Studying human behaviour through actions and rituals has always been so fascinating to me, and I’m grateful to have this opportunity to explore the phenomenon of Filipino gift giving. I am currently swimming in ideas and questions about the gifts we choose to give. How does it inform us about ourselves? What kind of gift giver are you? How do you replace yourself with objects when you can’t be with a loved one? Maiko as a mentor is like a lighthouse in the vast dark sea, her brightness shines through the ‘creator fog’ and clearly shows the way to new possibilities. I am excited to work with multidisciplinary collaborators Tin Gamboa and Alexandra Caprara for this phase of development. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions add to the momentum of the current work—engaging with a Balikbayan* box; a package to place your hopes, sacrifices and care.”
–Anjela Magpantay Come experience Anj’s In Development presentation of it is for when you meet me at HOLD ON LET GO, Friday, February 7th at 7pm. *A large, sturdy cardboard box filled with all sorts of items destined for loved ones back in the Philippines. Typically, Filipino immigrants send cash, household goods such as toothpaste, tea bags, magazines, toiletries, candy, toys, used clothes, and special-request gifts.
