Train

A man waits endlessly in a crowded Tokyo train station - dressed up in his best suit - to welcome the love of his life. There's only one problem. She's very, very late. At that same station, a woman walks up and down the platform, dangerously close to the edge. Something's not right. She can only remember one thing. It's a love story, but the ending's not very good. All this is closely observed by the girl who works at the noodle stand, who decides to take their fate into her own hands. Train is the story of three people brought together by a strange connection in a place where lives and possibilities intersect.
Based on personal histories and the blurred line between truth and imagination, TRAIN is written and performed by Maiko Bae Yamamoto, with musical accompaniment and performance by her father, Kofu Yamamoto, direction and choreography by Sarah Chase, additional direction by James Long, dramaturgy by Vicki Stroich, and featuring the design talents of Barbara Clayden, Cindy Mochizuki, Antoine Bedard and Jeff Harrison. TRAIN premiered at ATP's Enbridge playRites Festival and has since toured to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Gateway Theatre in BC.
“Train takes us into an imaginative world of love and loss as perceived through the eyes of a very contemporary Japanese sensibility."
-Calgary Herald
“Everything about this play projected simplicity. The idea: a man waiting in a train station. The set: a stack of Japanese bowls, a bench and a clothesline. The performers: a girl and her father. Theatre Replacement's Train built upon these relatively simple concepts to create a beautiful and haunting production.”
